With this site i finally have an excuse to rant about this fuckass game, without having some brainrotted reddit user say that ‘Im complaining too much’
Whats a brol star?
If you don’t already know Brawl Stars is a freemium mobile game made by Supercell, the same developers that made Clash of Clans and Clash Royale. It’s classified as a MOBA and third person hero shooter, although both of those terms don’t tell you much about the game. Brawl Stars is radically different and alot simpler than most games in its genre. You control the “Brawlers” (hero’s basically) two dimensionally and you have just a few buttons for your abilities. Anyways enough of basic information lets actually rant
2020: Good Times

I started playing BS (Brawl Stars) in February 2020, after seeing a well animated ad for the game. (pretty sure its the No Time To Explain one). Little me liked how the characters looked and decided to install the game on my shitty phone . It was simple to understand but the gameplay was still deep enough to make me keep playing. I started playing about a year after Global Release, and just in time for the Brawl Pass to be added to the game in May. Contrary to most battle passes in games, i actually really liked the (old) Brawl Pass. It was a buff to f2p (Free to Play) progression and it also made each update memorable. Because with each update came a new BP (Brawl Pass) and a new brawler tied to that Brawl Pass + skins and cosmetics all tied to that update’s theme. An important detail to BPs is that you could actually get half of them for FREE. (Each Brawl Pass cost 180 gems, you could get 90 gems on the free track of the Brawl Pass.) Although 10 year old me didnt really have to patience to save their gems, i still managed to get alot of BPs for free.
2021 - 2022: Smooth(ish) Sailing

Not much crazy was added in the rest of 2020, except for Map Maker (which fell off) and the plague that is Edgar. I do remember these years of the game fondly because they were just fun . There was just a solid formula of adding good brawlers and good skins and nothing more or less. Although there were some notable updates.
Ranked Update
In the first update of 2021 they replaced the previous pretty boring competitive mode with Ranked. Ranked was pretty straight forward. You get a gamemode and map to play and your team can ban and draft brawlers. Ranked was probably my first actual ‘’competitive’’ gaming experience and i liked it alot.Getting the max rank of Masters was also still an impressive feat (foreshadowing) and there were no weird strings attached with the gamemodes (foreshadowing).
Gears Update
This update is the reason i had to say Smoothish instead of Smooth sailing. But now i am going to say something that would get me excommunicated out of r/BrawlStars. It was a bad update, but definitely not the worst update. Yes it did nerf progression the most out of all updates, and yes Supercell had to get bullied into giving compensation. But as a casualish player i did not feel the effects of the update. If you didnt know this update added Power level 10 & 11 and also gears which are passive stat boosts. Both of these things required coins and both massively set back account progression. But imo the game was still very fun.
Boxes Removal
This was the very last update of 2022 and it changed the course of the game enough to warrant its own section
Boxes are gone! (sadly the players too.. why??)

Boxes were lootboxes that were the primary way of getting your resources. But with the increasing scrutiny on lootboxes in the EU Supercell had to find a new way of getting resources. Now introducing… CREDITS! You got credits from various sources in the game and you used them to unlock brawlers. Different rarities of brawlers required different amount of credits. This was actually a fantastic update! Before it could take years to get a specific legendary brawler but now it takes a month to get a legendary brawler. The progression was buffed by alot!.... So why did players leave?
- Well for that you have to consider these things:
- The majority of brawl stars players are kids
- Kids obviously love gambling
- You cant gamble with credits.
While content creators and dedicated players on reddit praised the update. On tiktok you saw countless videos of people hating on the update, saying that BS lost its soul and that its trash now. Remember: This update BUFFED progression and made getting brawlers EASIER. Yeah the playerbase is not the brightest..
2023: Ok we need to get those players back

2023 was a weird year for the game. For the dedicated players the first half of the year was pretty much the best it has ever been, but for Supercell the game was doing horrendous. In the first half they were producing banger after banger update. Masteries made maining a brawler fun and rewarded you with resources and cosmetics! With bling you could buy skins without using your saved up gems! It was an awesome time. It did not bring the kids back. So summer 2023 they added a sneaky little pest that would infect the game: Starr Drops. They are basically boxes lite ™. You can get them for free and only* for free (* they didnt keep this promise) but they gave you less rewards then the average box. Supercell hoped to get some gambling addicted players back with this.. and it kinda worked? There weren’t immediate results but you could see that starr drops did entice players. Anyways after Starr Drops they added… gulp… HYPERCHARGES

I literally did this face when the update was announced ^
Hypercharges
Now one greedy update was a honest mistake. But two greedy updates is too much. Hypercharges are an extra button that modify your super. They are only unlocked when your brawler is level 11. Nice right? Whats wrong with that?
- Well there were two things:
- Supercell cant balance hypercharges for the life of them. They are either shit or too broken. But the more pressing issue..
- THEY ARE EXPENSIVE AS FUCK. 5000 coins for one hypercharge is crazy. Thats enough coins to upgrade a brawler for power 1 to power 10. It fucking ruined the coin economy. Also if that wasn’t bad enough the update wouldve been shit even if hypercharges didnt exist.
- List of things that were doodoo stinky:
- Early access brawlers were introduced this season. Paying money to get a competitive edge by having a new brawler a week early
- They made the differences between power levels more stark, which made playing underleveled brawlers even harder.
- They also removed like half of the gamemodes from daily rotation?? But they reverted it thankfully
- oh yeah pearl is also kinda boring.. thats all
I quit the game for a month this update, thankfully they reverted the daily rotation thing when i came back.
We can be greedy AND get players?

Now the next update wasnt that bad while i was playing, but in retrospect it really dulled the game. They changed the brawl passes into being fully paid and having 3 tiers. The free tier got buffed to compensate not being able to buy a brawl pass as a f2p player. But now there was a tier above paid being premium… or diamond? I lowk forgot. Also Brawl Passes didnt have brawlers bound to them plus they were one month long instead of 2. The last change really felt worse as time went on, because now each single BP felt way less memorable because they had to compete with the other BP in their update instead of having the update fully dedicated to one BP.I dont think they added anything weird in brawlidays 2023 just a very unbalanced brawler so ill go on to 2024
2024: Brawl Stars at its most Popular, but not its Best

(by u/bananoob09)
This year sucked. They got tons of players!! Why? Because they invented a new formula! Now it’s: Have a collab/event with temporary resources to unlock skins. Thats it. But the problem with that formula is that the temporary event is almost always frustrating. Out of all the events in 2024 i only found Angels v Demons to be fun. The first event was the Godzilla Collab which gave way to mutations. Mutations are temporary event abilities that you’ll unlock by playing the event game modes or by just paying for the chance to get them. Mutations were almost always unbalanced. Plus they use this formula 4 times lmfao. Also in this year there were alot of small things i just did not like. Like the ranked rework! Now they added modifiers to the gamemodes which make ranked decisively less competitive plus getting masters is wayyy easier that even i could do it. Also they broke their tradition of adding 1 legendary a year and decided to add 2. When i complained about this people were saying that i was just whining… I WAS NOT! This year was marked by everything being temporary. But there’s one update left that i havent talked about
BRAWLIDAYS 2024

(by u/PapillonPando)
Brawlidays updates are the most fun updates of the year, because you get fun brawlers and skins and gamemodes and all that. This update had NONE of that. First off the Toy Story collab REALLY and i mean REALLY overshadowed the actual brawlidays that the update didnt even feel like a brawlidays. But the Toy Story collab was also just straight up bad. I dont care about toy story, the skins are mid and the event in January was also mid. But with the toy story collab was a brawler that i hated. BUZZ FUCKING LIGHTYEAR. First off no i do not want non brawl stars characters in my game thank you very much. The brawlers are the highlight of the game, their personalities and designs and how they fit into their trios are what makes this game fun. Buzz Lightyear had a boring design and was literally half finished. (Had 1 gadget and no star powers plus his hypercharge did nothing like wtf supercell). But even though he was half finished he was fucking broken. He had 3 forms which means you cant counterplay him and he was fucking EVERYWHERE. It was not fun to play the game at all. And you wanna know whats the worst? He was a temporary brawler. I puked in my mouth when i heard that. Being able to eventually get all of the brawlers and use them to their fullest potential is what made this game f2p friendly. Having a brawler you can never use again sucks. For example what if you actually wanted to main that brawler? You couldnt he would be taken away from you after 2 months. Thankfully they never did anything with temporary brawlers again. This is probably because this update fuckking tanked their player count. After all of this i soft quit the game
2025: Current State

In 2025 the updates really havent gotten better. There was the ranked rework which was mixed. Then after that they added barf i mean they *pukes* added Ultra legen- soidjfsf daries…. which are a very good idea coupled with the credits nerfs… also talking about credit nerfs the last update removed masteries which means you can only get credits from the trophy road and bp… and you also cant store credits anymore…. yayy. Now i fully quit and my sanity has improved.
Closure
In the end Supercell is actively fucking over their playerbase. It was expected because they did the same with Clash Royale in 2023, but it still hurts. In the future i do not expect better updates and the future of the game looks grim. I played this game obsessively for 5 years but i just cant anymore.
